Hello! My name is Dixie, and I’m a very good girl with a hard past. I am a nine-year-old rat terrier mix but don’t let that fool you – I’m happy to rest and take it easy but I also LOVE to walk and play.

I am so funny and quirky. I love to cuddle and give you so many kisses. When it’s time for a walk, I will show you how excited I am by spinning in circles over and over again. I love to cuddle under the blankets or even rest my head on your pillow. My humans really are my everything.

I’m okay with other dogs if properly introduced and given a good amount of time to adjust. Otherwise, I am quite scared of strange dogs on the street and will bark because I don’t want them to come towards me!

The same goes for people – I love human attention if properly introduced. I have not had the best experience with people in the past, especially men, and so I will be quite scared of strangers in the street and will bark to keep them away. All of this means that I will likely do best in smaller cities so I can go on walks in peace! It also means I shouldn’t live with little children. I would really do best living with one person but I’m also okay otherwise.

Unfortunately, because of my sad past, I cannot be crated at all. And since I am a senior girl, I will need you to lay down some pee pads in case I can’t hold it enough when you’re busy or out of the house.

A really nice trainer showed me how to be less reactive on walks, and because I am so smart, I learn fast. I am only 15 pounds so it’s easy to pick me up when I get scared and I will stop barking. Otherwise, it just takes some high value treats like hotdogs to get me distracted. With some time and dedication, I will conquer my fears! My foster parents worked with the trainer to help me and it was very beneficial. My adopters will be asked to also work with a trainer to get me off on the right foot in my new home.

It’s been a hard few years. I hope I can find my forever home with people who I can love and trust unconditionally. I really do deserve the best and I promise I will give you my best too.
