Hello Everyone, Meet beautiful Oakley! 🙂 Though we’re not to sure her backstory, we do know she’s from a shelter in Tennessee and was there for quite a bit before getting pulled out. We guess she’s around 10 months old and a retriever mix of some sort. Oakley came into the rescue severely underweight with a wicked ear infection, covered in dirt & faeces with a few fleas & tick bites. Due to her history she’s quite underweight but we’re working hard to fix that! After a good bath and doctor visit later she started to show her amazing personality. She’s approximately 11kg but estimated to be about 15kg. Unfortunately due to her past she’s still terrified of the world. We’ve been working hard on learning how to trust new people, go out in public and even for car rides.
Oakley is the type of pup to choose her person and stay loyal to them! We’ve had Oakley in our home for a little over a month now and she has already made so much progress from where she started. She’s gained so much confidence within the home but despite being exposed to different people she still isn’t sure about them. Foster mom is so insanely proud of me but I still have a lot more work to do.
At home she’s a ball of joy, she doesn’t doesn’t quite understand the concept of running or using stairs (which makes us think she was never really exposed to much of it) but that doesn’t stop her! Oakley hops around our house and up/down the stairs to get her excitement out. Her Australian Shepard brother slightly judges her but knows she’s working really hard to fix it haha.
Due to all her nervousness she is still very much a flight risk and will run/hide when things move too fast or get too close. We’re working on recalls and some leash manners right now. Unfortunately the nerves have also caused some pretty tricky gastrointestinal issues that we’re working on! Because of all her nerves she’s needing some TLC while she gain’s more confidence.
Oakley loves other animals. Though we aren’t to sure if she’d be good with a cat in the home, she has been exposed to them and doesn’t quite mind. She does however gain so much confidence whenever there’s another dog close by, due to this Oakley would be best in a home with another dog. She does need someone with a pretty active lifestyle, who will work on socializing her often but also will take a nice nap with her. She is crate trained as she stays in the crate when foster moms at work. We’re currently still working on basic commands like stay, sit and paw.
Oakley is one of the most gentle & loving pups I’ve met. She is loyal to her people and will smother you with kisses whenever she gets the chance. She has been exposed to toys and bones since arriving in our care and they’re her absolute favourite things.
