Gwen

Gwen has been adopted!

Welcome to your new world Gwen and Wilson, from the McCarthy dog loving family 🐾💕

Gwen is the perfect mix of sweet and spunky. She is a very easy-going, happy dog who has loved all the people and dogs she’s met so far. About 10 years old, Gwen loves to spend her days sleeping near her person or watching all the animals and people passing by the window. She will need a family committed to helping her lose some weight, but she is just a thick, soft girl – literally and metaphorically – with lots of love to give! Gwendolyn’s cute butt is one feature that everyone notices and adores. She looks like she’s waddling when she walks, and her butt wiggles of excitement are just the cutest! Gwennie’s foster mom jokes that with her soft coat, black spots, and hilarious sound effects, she is more of a sheep-cow-pig than a dog (but we’ll stick with ‘dog’ for her adoption papers!). Gwen will surely be a daily source of joy and laughter for her forever family.

History & Health:
Gwen was found as a stray and was rescued from a shelter in Gatineau, so we don’t know much about her history other than she was found showing signs of neglect. This little French girl made the long trip down to London, Ontario with the help of some amazing people from Freedom Drivers. Guinevere needed a groom shortly after intake, and a full vet check-up later that week. She had a dental where they cleaned her perfect teeth – no extractions needed! She also received some extra TLC to take care of some minor health issues, and she was given medications to prevent flea/tick and heartworm. More information on Gwen’s health history can be provided upon inquiry. It is noteworthy that Gwennifer has dry eyes and will need eye treatment 2-3 times a day for the rest of her life. She also has a cough that did not go away despite various treatment attempts, indicating it is likely chronic and related to something anatomical and most likely an elongated palate. Chest x-rays were done as well and showed no issues. Using a harness rather than a collar helps to prevent rubbing against her trachea and triggering her cough, and losing a bit of weigh should help her, too. She is spayed, up-to-date with vaccines, and she has also been microchipped. Other than some lumps and bumps, dry eyes, and a little arthritis (which can be managed with pain meds), she’s a healthy, happy girl!

Personality:
Gwen is a typical senior dog in that she loves to nap and relax for most of her day, but she gets her bursts of playfulness and LOVES treats and toys. She was clearly fed from the plate in her past life because she will dance to beg for food, if you let her! Her foster mom has been trying to train her not to beg for human food and she has made great progress on this, but she still tries to trick new people into giving in to her adorable food-begging dance. When that doesn’t work, she will bring out the sass! She isn’t a loud barker and she does great in an apartment overall, but she will try to vocalize her demands and will let you know when she’s displeased. Her forever family will need to continue helping Gwennard work on her manners.

While she is typically a low energy dog, Gwen gets the zoomies about once a day where she loves to be chased and plays “tag” with her foster mom. She also loves to play with toys and is great at entertaining herself with them. She loves other dogs and would love to play with a friend, but she’s still learning how to do that. She would love a confident dog to teach her more about playing and all things about being a dog! She walks very well on leash and is learning about the joys of walks!

Special Needs:
As previously mentioned, Gwendolyn has dry eyes that require treatment 2-3 times a day for the rest of her life. This treatment can be done using prescribed medicated ointment or eye drops from the vet, or certain types of over-the-counter eye drops for humans can be used as an alternative. Gwen is not a fan of this, but thankfully this process is getting easier over time. Her foster mom will tell you all about this. Gwyneth Pawltrow will require grooming every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting and keep her looking and feeling her best. Like her eye treatments, Gwen was not a fan of grooming and will require sedation medication prescribed by the vet in order to keep her calm and safe.

Gwendella requires a family dedicated to being mindful of her diet and exercise. She was noted to have arthritis in her back hips, so speaking with your dogtor about options for pain medications might help Gwennie the Pooh feel better and want to be more active. She is currently managing fine without them, but she spends a lot of time resting and needs help getting on and off the furniture. She also manages stairs okay, but often looks to her foster mom for help after a long walk.

Ideal Home:
As mentioned above, Gwenberly is an easy houseguest who would do well in any type of home. Gwyneth loves her walks, but they are usually short and sweet. Given her weight and arthritis, Gwen often needs help with stairs and getting on and off of furniture, so her future family needs to be able to lift her regularly (she is about 15lbs). She loves all people and would be happy in any family that will spoil her with love and attention. Gwen is currently bonded to her foster mom, but she seems to really like men. Gwen is fine when left alone, but she would love to have someone home most of the time to sleep her days away next to. She currently lives in an apartment as the only pet where she loves being the centre of attention, but she would do well with another dog friend as well. She does well with children and cats too.

Notes from Foster Mom:
Gwen is such a special girl who requires a forever home dedicated to coming up with as many ridiculous, love-infused nicknames for her as I do. She has come so far in the month that I’ve had her, and I can’t wait to find her perfect forever family so she can really thrive. Gwen requires a home with patient adopters willing to work to gain her trust and administer her daily eye treatments, and in return, she will give you love, laughter, and so much joy. She has truly been so healing for my heart and I hope I have been the same for hers. Now the hard part – to find her the perfect forever home!
