Caleb is available for adoption
Sponsored by Toba, in honour of Toby, Riley, and Penny. Every furbaby deserves a loving home and happiness.
Hi my name is Caleb or Caleb-Cutie as my foster mom calls me. Did you know that Caleb is an ancient name that means dog or faithful? My foster mom learned this quickly when I came to live with her. I am a very brave and loving boy even though I’ve never lived in a house with a human family of my own. The first time I experience something I’m timid but after that, I tackle the same experience like an old pro. A few things I love:
Food, in all forms. I recently learned about stuffed Kongs and snuffle pads and they’re the best! I am very curious about human food on plates so my foster mom keeps a close eye on me so I don’t eat anything I shouldn’t.
Napping. While I can be a bit nervous in the house (it’s my first time living with a family!) I settle down for naps with my foster brothers really well. I love the couch, taking advantage of any available lap and sleeping in the bed with my foster mom.
Being outside. I’m super excited by my foster mom’s fenced backyard and I’ve been doing my pees and poos out there from the very first day! Now that I’ve tackled the leash, I also accompany my foster brothers on long walks in the woods.
My foster Mom says I should make a few new year’s resolutions including:
Achieving a healthy routine. My curly hair and round shape make me look like an adorable stuffed toy. But, I know I would feel a lot better and be more comfortable if I was active and fit.
Boundaries with people and dogs. I really want love and affection all of the time and I need time to understand that my family is always going to be here for me, so I don’t need to rush.
Being left alone. I want to be around people and dogs all the time. I’m working on spending time in my own room with treat toys. I will bark and even cry if left alone but I do settle down. Overtime I will get more comfortable.
More from my foster Mom:
Caleb is the sweetest boy ever. He’s been such a great house guest it’s hard to believe he’s never lived with a family before!
Caleb needs a household that will go slow and be patient. If his first experience with something is positive he is very open to trying it again. For example, he learned to walk on a leash very quickly with a lot of positive reinforcement.
He is still figuring the ins and outs of family life. To help support this, he would do very well in a home with another dog so that he can learn from them. He could potentially do well as a single dog if his humans spend a lot of time with him. He isn’t comfortable being left completely alone so, if his people will be out of the house frequently, he will need another dog companion.
He hasn’t been tested with kids but based on his personality, older dog savvy kids would be great for him as he loves attention and affection. He’s still young and would benefit from daily enrichment including walks, snuffle pads, road trips (he’s great in the car), play time with toys etc. His ideal home would be a house with a fenced yard as he really enjoys being outside.
Caleb’s recent vet check went very well. As is very common in small dogs, he has a grade 2-3 luxating patella in both hind legs. It is more prominent on the right and he displays the typical “skip” in his step. This grade of luxation is not requiring surgical intervention. To optimize Caleb not having issues in the future, he needs to be kept at a healthy weight. Supplements such as glucosamine chondroitin and/or omegas can also be helpful.
