Save Me Remembers Jacques
Sponsored by Toba, in honour of Toby, Riley and Penny. Every furbaby deserves a loving home and happiness
Jacques arrived into foster care from Quebec in need of medical care and a warm spot to rest. We know very little of Jacques’ story but he is an energetic ~10 year old, loves to walk, has some vision and hearing loss, enjoys the company of other dogs and loves to be around people. Although not a cuddly dog, Jac loves a good chin rub, to follow his foster family from room to room and wags his nubby little tail when a treat is offered.
Jac has excellent house manners; has no interest in getting up on furniture or into anything in the house, knows quickly which blanket is his and likes to toss a toy from time to time. Jacques has no interest in sleeping in a dog bed, usually you can find him curled up on the floor. He is very food motivated and can be a bit grabby with a treat. We believe this is due to his vision loss, he has made great progress being patient. Jac is house trained and needs to go out every 3 hours during the day but sleeps a solid 8 hrs at night. Although he doesn’t bark to tell you it’s time, he paces between the door and his people to let you know. Jac wears a belly band when new dogs come into his environment.
Jac is a quiet dog when someone is home with him – doesn’t hear/react to the door bell, greets visitors calmly. He is anxious when left alone, does pace and will bark off and on. This separation anxiety has greatly improved since arriving in foster care but will need continued work.
Jacques typically does not follow verbal or hand signals, we believe it is a combination of visual/hearing loss, a lack of experience and language change. He has adapted well to our routine and knows what’s expected of him. He is a gentle dog, wants to only be with you. You know when Jacques needs something – he quietly stands in front of you and stares…just waiting. He’s a bit of a weirdo but so sweet!
Outdoors Jacques loves to sniff!! He requires his guardian to watch out for obstacles in his environment to keep him safe – water grates on the road, step downs…all can be dangerous. Jac walks well on a harness and leash. He loves to be outside, is currently walked three times a day to build his strength. Greeting strangers typically goes smoothly, he will approach and sniff them. Due to his vision loss fast moving hands can make him startle and back away. Jac greets other dogs his size with enthusiasm, he reads and sends good signals. He can be wary of large dogs but has shown to adapt quickly when they are near.
Jacques has had three surgeries since arriving into foster care. A removal of bladder stones; the surgery went well, he recovered quickly and it’s had no effect on his ability to hold his urine however he is on veterinary urinary diet that will be required for the rest of his life to ensure stones do not reoccur. (cost approx. $100 a month). His second surgery was lipoma removal and dental, then he had a cyst rupture that needed to be removed; he’s made a good recovery!! Now he’s in tip top shape with all his medical needs met. He is UTD on all vaccines and has gained 3.5 pounds in foster care and is at his ideal weight.
Jacques ideal home will:
• Be patient with his vision/hearing limitations – can’t be in a hurry
• Have children over the age of 12 that are considerate of his senior status
• Continue to work with him on his separation anxiety
• Offer a home with single level living or the ability to gate off areas that pose a hazard
• Love his sweet idiosyncrasies
