Japanese Chin Mix – Male – 9 lbs – 3-5 yrs (approx.)
Sponsored on behalf of our beautiful rescue dogs Dolly, Mickey, Molly and Mocka we are thrilled to sponsor Stanley.
Stanley is making incredible progress since his arrival. He so badly wants to be part of a family and he has changed so much since he came into care in mid October. He is truly an inspiration.
Stanley was seized from a backyard breeding situation. From what we understand, Stanley was born there and this is the only life he has known up to this point.
Stanley has learned about crate training, and keeps his crate clean overnight. During the day he is taken outside to do his bathroom business, he quickly does this and is ready to go back inside. He is easily manageable in this regard now, but he is going to need ground floor access to a securely fenced yard.
Stanley is slowly adjusting to touch, and though nervous about it, he does allow some petting now. His foster mom works with this daily, just by simply lightly petting and resting her hands on him when he’s relaxed. He’s even come to understand what chest scratching is all about. He is slowly coming around to this close physical contact. He will need an adopter who can accept his level of love, and be understanding.
So many things are new to Stanley. He was afraid of food dishes, but has now learned to eat from one. He’s learning about toys, and will even play fetch once he’s comfortable in his surroundings. He loves a comfy bed now too and will often root around to fluff it up before a nap.
Because Stanley has lived as a breeder/mill dog, and we think someone with experience with mill dogs would be beneficial. He would do best with someone home most of the time. He would likely adjust faster with an existing well balanced dog to learn from, however if the situation is right, a home without other dogs would be considered.
Stanley has recently been neutered and had a dental done. At that time, xrays were taken of his back end. Stanley has some deformity to his tibia bones, luxating patella, and mild hip dysplasia. Our orthopedic surgeon has been consulted and unfortunately, surgery is not being suggested. The likelihood is, that given his tibia bones are twisted, patella surgery would not be successful in re-aligning his legs. This would further complicate hip surgery. Having said this, Stanley does get around pretty well and will even navigate stairs. An adopter would need to limit extreme exercise, keep ideal body weight, and give supplements to help ensure he remains as healthy as possible. In senior years, he will likely require pain management. He is otherwise healthy.
We are open to accepting applications, keeping in mind that Stanley still has a ways to go with his rehab. Often this process can take some time, trust needs to be earned and learning a whole new way of life doesn’t happen overnight. He will need a human he can rely on to be patient with him, to be understanding. As well, someone who can be creative in managing him so that he can continue to excel. He’s a sweet quiet little guy who is curious about his new life and seems to be open to the new changes going on in it. Every day we see positive changes in him and we celebrate his growth.
