Snowflake

Poodle Mix – Female – 20 lbs – 10 yrs (approx.)

Sponsored in loving memory of Dad, Tequila and Penny

Meet Snowflake. She is a 20lb. poodle mix who has made great gains in the last 7 weeks. Snowflake (aka Snow) is 10 years old but has the energy and playfulness of a dog half her age. She love to play with her toys, is incredibly cuddly and affectionate and thrives on rumbling and wrestling with her dog friends.

Although she can be hesitant and may bark at strangers, she readily meets them looking for a pat or scratch behind the ear. At this point in time she is reluctant to approach small children. Snow travels well in the car, sleeps all night either in the bed or her crate, is housetrained, and is well mannered in the house. She frequently sits when wanting some attention and is learning to stay for short periods of time. She is spayed and is up to date on all her shots.

At the time of arrival, her physical care had been somewhat neglected. Her dental hygiene was quite poor which required a lot of dental work and the removal of numerous teeth. One of the teeth was abscessed and the infection caused an elevation of a liver enzyme. This was all normalized after a round of antibiotics and the tooth was removed. Happily, this has done nothing to her healthy appetite as she enjoys softened kibble and canned food.

While we don’t know what the cause of her injury was, or how long ago it happened, diagnostics found that Snow had suffered some type of trauma to her Achilles tendon on her back right leg. As it was not addressed at the time, an area of calcification developed, and this is the cause of her gait. After consultation with Dr. Justin Levy, the orthopedic surgeon, he felt that the potential risks and complications did not outweigh the potential benefits. The option of amputation was also discussed. Since Snow’s arrival she has shown a marked improvement in her strength, and she has been using the leg much more as she builds more muscle mass. After a consult with both Dr. Levy and Snow’s primary veterinarian, Dr. Tara Montgomery, it was decided to not do any surgery. Should she develop any issues in the future, amputation may remain an option.

Currently Snow is medication free, happy, healthy and lovable. She will continue to thrive in a household with another playful dog or two, perhaps with teenagers and adults. Little children are not advised as she is quite uncomfortable and hesitant around them. Her recall is improving but at this time a fenced yard would be best.
