Gilbert

Chihuahua Mix – Male – 15 lbs – 3 yr (approx.)

Gilbert is sponsored on behalf of Pumba, “a dude with a tude”. Pumba welcomed Ellie, a sister from a different Mister and a Save Me Dog rescue, into his home to share his mom, his sister, Kenzie, his beds and his toys. Pumba touches the hearts everyday of those who love him. A gentle soul who loves to be with his mom, curled up in one of his beds at her feet while she works. Like most dogs Pumba loved Covid as he had more “mom time”.

Meet Gill! Gilbert is a 3-year-old chihuahua mix who joined Save Me Rescue all the way from Tennessee.

Gilbert is a champion cuddler, he loves nothing more than to spend his days following his people around and cuddling up with them at every opportunity. He is good with new people, but very typical to the breed, may take a few moments to check you out from a distance before deciding you are deserving of his kisses and cuddles. He has met lots of new people during his time in care and has come a long way in his greetings of new people ESPECIALLY if they have treats!

Gil is crate trained, house trained (with regular trips outside), and does well with other balanced dogs. He has made several friends while in rescue and has come a long way in his communication with other dogs. He can be overwhelmed by overly exuberant dogs so would prefer a home as an only dog or with a dog who has calm energy.

Before coming into care, Gil was hit by a vehicle and as a result, had his front right leg amputated. He has adjusted incredibly well to his injury and doesn’t let it slow him down one bit! As he ages the addition of a joint supplement as well as keeping him at an appropriate weight will be important to keeping him in peak condition.

Gill can be a bit of “spicy chihuahua” around high-value treats and toys, if you have owned a chihuahua before you likely know exactly what we mean! This has improved immensely through training but as he transitions into a new home it is reasonable to assume this behavior may pop up. For this reason, we recommend he eat and have high-value items in his crate, where he can enjoy them undisturbed. Gill really likes kids and can safely be around them we just do not recommend an adoptive home with young kids. While an adult can easily identify his signals and give him space, it may not be as easy for a child to identify. Gil is a dog who communicates very well when he is feeling uncomfortable or protective and it’s important that this communication is always listened to and respected.

It’s been amazing to watch Gil transform during his time in care. He has gained confidence, settled, and genuinely seems happier. He is a dog who is bursting with personality and one who will make you laugh multiple times a day with his antics. He responds well to a calm, consistent leadership and we are hopeful he can find exactly that in his forever home.
