Walter

Beagle – Male – 20 lbs – 3 yrs (approx.)

Sponsored in celebration of Martin and Susan’s 51st wedding anniversary.

Walter is a 3-year-old beagle who recently joined Save Me Rescue. Before coming into care Walter spent his life in an environment where he was primarily crated without outdoor access. The whole world was new to him 2 weeks ago about but the amount he has learned and changed during his short time in foster care is remarkable.

Although Walters first few years were tough, he acts like a dog who has never had a bad day. It’s been incredible to see how resilient he is, and we have had so much fun watching his hilarious personality emerge.

I joke that Walter is perfect in all the ways that are important and naughty in all the appropriately beagle ways. He is exceptionally good with all people and other animals. He loves kids and would be a wonderful dog for a young family. He adores other dogs and loves to play and be part of a pack. Although he does not need to go to a home with other dogs, while in foster he has become quite attached to our dog and often looks to her for guidance when he is feeling unsure so another dog in the home would be beneficial.

Walter is crate trained and we are currently using his crate at night and any time we are unable to supervise. The first week he was very quiet in his crate. As he has started to get more comfortable he has started to bark for a few minutes each time he is crated but then quickly settles. For a beagle he isn’t overly vocal, but he does like to bark when playing and on occasion we hear him let out the sweetest little howl.

Walter was not housetrained when he came into care. He has made tons of progress and now when kept on schedule is about 90% of the way there. He will need someone who can stay on top of him with his housetraining and who will be understanding of the fact that he will likely regress when moved to a new environment. He doesn’t require a home with a yard as he is good on leash, but a yard would be beneficial for his housetraining.

Typical to most beagles Walter’s ears are mostly decorative so he wouldn’t be an ideal candidate for a home where the hope is to have him spend time off leash. He is an active dog though so will need a home committed to giving him daily walks or who has a yard he can rip around in with his friends.

Walter is being neutered on June 13th and will be ready to join his new family the week following.
