Penny

Chihuahua Mix – Female – 11 lbs – 9 yrs (approx.)

Sponsored by Kira & Jeff

Penny is an extremely sweet and feisty girl. She is a classic chihuahua who can be territorial and bossy, but she also has an extremely sweet and soft side to her.

She is a big dog in a small dogs body. She thrives when she gets about 1 hour of exercise a day, whether that be through walks, hikes on a long leash or playing tug and fetch in the house.

She can be a bit intense when meeting new dogs initially as she likes to be the boss, but she is very social and enjoys playing with dogs, even the big ones! We do not think Penny would do well with cats however. Penny is quite social with people and enjoys cuddling up on the couch and in the bed. When people come over to the house, she can be a bit territorial and barky initially, but after she gets to say hello, she quickly calms down and opens up to people. This has been something we have been working on with her and she has improved a lot!

Penny walks well on leash. Previous to training she pulled very hard on a harness, but now she is capable of walking on a loose leash and can even walk in a heel command. Penny has a high prey drive and enjoys keeping an eye out for squirrels! Her recall is very good, but should continue to be worked on with her new family to ensure success around things that compete for her attention.

Penny is house trained. She also crate trained and can be left alone for several hours crated without issue. When she first arrived she did bark quite a bit when left alone, and it is expected that transitioning to a new home there will be a bit of a regression with the new setting, but with training help this should be easily managed. Penny will bark at noises that happen outside of the home and is probably best suited for a quieter home, and no apartment/condos  because of this.

Overall Penny is an awesome dog with a huge personality. Although she is older, she has the heart and spirit of a young dog. She loves to be challenged mentally and physically, and loves nothing more than cuddling up with her people. She would be well suited to a family who enjoys being active and wants to include her in that. Whoever adopts her will always be laughing and will look forward to sharing their home with a 10lb boss of the house!
