Patty’s story begins in a place no dog should ever have to call home. Like far too many dogs, she spent the early part of her life as a breeder in a puppy mill. We may never know everything she experienced during those years, but what we do know is that Patty has wasted no time discovering the comfort, security, and joy of being part of a loving family.
Patty is a beautiful tri-colour spaniel with the biggest, most expressive eyes. They are eyes that seem to speak of trust, devotion, and a deep longing to love and be loved in return.
Patty did very well with all of her intake vetting. She was spayed, her vaccines brought up to data and microchipped.  On examination she was found to have a grade 3 luxating patella and it is not affecting her mobility and believed to not need surgery. Our orthopaedic surgeon tends to only recommend surgery for the worst of the grade 4 luxations and when mobility is being compromised. It is important to keep Patty at a healthy weight and supplements like omegas and glucosamine can be helpful.
Her favourite place in the world is curled up on someone’s lap, where she can snuggle in, feel safe, and soak up every bit of affection. Given the choice, she would happily stay there all day. When a lap is not available, Patty follows her people from room to room like a little shadow, simply wanting to be close and included in the everyday moments of family life.
She is slowly learning that the world extends far beyond the walls of a crate. With the reassurance and example of her three foster siblings, Patty has begun exploring the wonders of the backyard. Her curiosity is growing, and each day she becomes a little braver and more independent, venturing farther from her humans while still checking to make sure they are nearby.
Patty has taken to walks remarkably well and is learning how to walk on a leash. Every now and then, the big world becomes a little overwhelming, and she needs to be picked up and reassured with a cuddle before continuing on her way.
She currently lives with three dogs and a cat and would be happy in a home with either. Patty loves being part of a pack and benefits from the companionship, stimulation, and confidence that other animals provide. She is first in line at dinnertime, never misses an opportunity for a treat, and enthusiastically joins the bigger dogs in defending the house whenever the doorbell rings.
Although Patty may seem like the very definition of a lap dog, it would be a disservice to see her only that way. A delightful, feisty side of her personality is beginning to emerge. She is becoming playful, spirited, and increasingly confident, and she deserves a family that will encourage her to continue growing into the dog she was always meant to be.
Patty has mastered the stairs and tackles them with fearless enthusiasm. However, her foster parents limit how often she uses them for her safety. A home with few stairs would be ideal, or she should be closely monitored when going up and down them.
Her house training is progressing well. By following the example of the other dogs, she is learning that outside is the place to do her business. She still prefers to have one of her humans nearby during bathroom breaks to offer encouragement and reassurance.
Because Patty has such a strong need to be close to her people, she is looking for a home where someone is present most of the time. With the company of other dogs, she is comfortable being left for a couple of hours, but she would not do well alone for long periods.
Patty is still discovering the big, wonderful world around her, and her true personality continues to unfold. She may need a little extra patience, reassurance, and care as she adjusts, but the love and devotion she gives in return are immeasurable.
Patty is not simply looking for a home. She is looking for the family she has waited her whole life to find.
