Lucy is a 4-year-old Cavalier who came into our care after being retired from a breeding facility. Prior to arriving in foster care, it is safe to assume that Lucy lived a very sheltered life, as it is clear that living in a home and spending time outdoors are both new experiences for her.
Lucy is a shy girl who has been slowly coming out of her shell during her time in foster care and has even started to show off her quirky personality. She is fully house-trained and crate-trained, although her foster family has been working hard to encourage her to spend more time outside of her crate. It is her safe space, but each day she becomes a little more comfortable exploring the world around her.
Lucy loves other dogs and would do best in a home with another canine companion, particularly if her adopter is away from home during the day. She also absolutely loves food. Unfortunately for Lucy, she is significantly overweight so her foster family has been working hard to keep her active and on an appropriate diet. She has already lost 2 pounds, but she will need an adopter who is committed to continuing her weight-loss journey.
Not uncommon for Cavaliers, Lucy has some breathing challenges due to her facial structure, which are made more noticeable by her extra weight. This is our polite way of saying the girl snores! She also has a grade 4 luxating patella in her right leg. At this time, no additional treatment is required, but maintaining a healthy weight will help reduce stress on her joints and improve her overall comfort. She is currently taking a joint supplement and fish oil to help support her mobility.
Lucy is quite a collector (another common cavalier trait) and ends most days with a small treasure trove of toys and household items tucked away in her crate. She loves to cuddle with anyone willing to share their lap and is the sweetest companion. Overall, she is a very quiet dog, but if her foster family is spending time somewhere in the house she cannot reach, she is likely to bark in protest. She doesn’t like to miss out!
She is still learning to enjoy the outdoors, but she has become quite the pro at walks. While she currently seems motivated to get them over with so she can return to the comfort of her bed, we are hopeful that with time and confidence she will learn to truly enjoy her outdoor adventures. Lucy has already come a long way, and with a patient, understanding family, we know she will continue to thrive.
