Lucca has made the most remarkable medical progress since he’s been in our care, we’re all so happy. This young guy has won the hearts of so many and is going to make such an amazing family pet.

Lucca (as well as his already adopted brother) came to us a few months ago in really poor medical condition. Lucca was emaciated, extremely sick with pneumonia and unable to walk properly. X-rays showed bilateral luxating patellas. His knee caps were actually positioned on the outsides of his legs, which caused him to walk almost like a sea turtle. He could not stand straight on his back legs at all. As we got him over the pneumonia, and he started eating properly, he just completely changed. His posture improved to the point where he was running and jumping, like any other puppy. Recent x-rays showed that his knees have completely corrected themselves and are now not showing any grade of luxation.

Lucca does still have a slightly abnormal gait, but given the progress he’s made over the past two months, this may also completely correct itself. It doesn’t slow him down, and is hardly noticeable now. Lucca is still very much a puppy and his growth plates are still open so he can not be fully assessed orthopedically. At this point his hips do look slightly underdeveloped for his age, in the most recent X-rays. Our vet and our orthopedic surgeon are surprised he’s made such a turn around and are happy with his progress. They suggest that an adopter have his hips checked once he’s done growing just to be on top of him medically.

Lucca loves everyone. He has such a lovely personality and sweet disposition. He easily fits in everywhere. He would make a great pup for a family with children but he would also be fine with a family of adults too. We think he would be absolutely happiest with another playful dog in the house though. He really finds his life lessons and companionship with his foster dog siblings. We are working on his house training and it going really well. He is crated at night and has an exercise pen to play in when his foster mom is working. He’s easily learned a few commands, so he’s a smart boy as well. Loves the outside, rain or shine.

His estimated full grown size is about 25 lbs. Lucca also will be a dog that requires regular grooming. His fur grows fast. He’s been low shedding up to this point, but he has the most unruly curls! He is really good about grooming and bathing, which is good because his love for outside leaves him running through leaves and garden, and rolling across the lawn as he chases his toys. He’s such a boy! Always on the go outside having the best time.
