Sponsored by Alessia Maculso – This sponsorship is in celebration of my sweet boy’s 10th birthday; Loulou, my little “teapot” yorkie, you mean so much to me.
Jasper is a nervous but very sweet little guy who came into care from a hoarding and animal neglect situation. When he was first brought into the shelter he was covered in fleas and had some skin issues as a result of that. He has been treated, and his skin and fur has mostly resolved now.
When you first meet Jasper, his ears will be down and his tail will be tucked. If you speak gently to him, his tail will start to wiggle (and wiggle) and then the ears will come up, and if you offer him your hand you will get a kiss. He will shake nervously, but his curiosity will take over and he gets excited to make a new friend.
It seems that Jasper can be nervous of hands reaching for him. He likes to approach people but will back away when you reach to pet him the first few times. He will cower in fear and does nervous pee when you try to pick him up. For the time being, his foster mom has a belly band on him until he over comes this fear, and the submissive peeing settle. He also doesn’t seem to have been carried around much, so he is nervous of this especially when descending stairs. We assume just the floating feeling is all new to him.
Jasper has a very playful personality and as he starts to trust his foster mom, he enjoys play time with her. He’ll jump around and nibble on her fingers gently. He likes chew bones but doesn’t show much interest in toys. He loves a good fluffy dog bed and is happy to hang out with or without his humans around. He’s crate trained and quiet while he’s in there. He has picked up on house training quickly, but doesn’t know how to ask to go out. So, a solid routine will be key to success. He has even been good about going out in the snow, as long as you go with him.
He’s a good eater, LOVES human food and isn’t above a little begging if it results in a nibble of something available in the kitchen. He has very little teeth left but still enjoys kibble. He enjoys food game/toys too. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home but mostly ignores them and does his own thing. He likes to follow his foster parents around but will wander off and nap by himself too.
All in all, he’s adjusted well to his new life. His only area of concern is the submissive urinating. We expect that will resolve as he builds confidence and learns that nothing bad is going to happen to him. That human hands are kind and bring safety and love now. An adopter will need to be patient with him and provide a good consistent routine, from that they will get a wonderful little companion.
