Introducing Eldora (or as her foster family calls her Dora), the sweet tempered shy Bernese Mountain Dog. Eldora came to Save Me Dog Rescue after living her life in a kennel at a high volume breeding operation, also known as a puppy mill. Eldora is nearly five years old; but prior to foster care she experienced very little. Eldora had never lived in a house, had a name or experienced being cared for with any tenderness.

Living in a home is a big adjustment, but Eldora has taken well to it; she enjoys a quiet corner to observe the goings on of the home. She is never destructive in the home, even when left for extended periods of time and she is fully housetrained. But the first few weeks of living with Eldora is a bit like living with a ghost; you’ll get the feeling of being watched constantly. You’ll think you see something out of the corner of your eye, but by the time you turn around to look you may just see a quick flash of a black tail. It’s just Eldora observing you and if you left the room seeing where you went. If something goes bump in the night it’s likely Eldora checking out her new surroundings while the house is nice and quiet.

Eldora doesn’t give her trust freely, it will be earned through consistent routines, positive reinforcement and patience. Eldora’s family will need to understand that it could be weeks or months before she seeks out their affection and attention. But Eldora’s foster parents believe that she may settle in faster in a home environment different than her foster home. Eldora is currently being fostered in a home with a six month old baby, given her gentle nature she is fine with him but she is sensitive to the emotions of those around her and appears stressed by the unpredictability of the baby’s emotions and behaviors. For this reason Eldora wouldn’t mind a home with children visitors but would do best in a home of adults.

Eldora is not a very active dog, she likes napping and relaxing and currently is stressed out going for walks. Eldora thrives in a fenced yard where she can get her zoomies out and feel safe. Eldora is most relaxed out in the yard, for this reason a fenced yard is a must for her forever home.

Eldora is good with all dogs and cats but doesn’t need a canine companion as she is mostly quietly curious about her foster dog sibling and not dependent.

Eldora is currently very nervous about car rides and will require an owner who can help her into the vehicle. At 85 pounds this can be a two person job. Once in the vehicle she settles in nicely. Loading and unloading are the hard parts.

Ultimately, Eldora is looking for a family who accepts her as she is now and is ready to invest their time and build on the groundwork that has been laid in foster care. In time, and in the right environment Eldora’s foster mom believes she will become a deeply loyal and loving companion.

Eldora is spayed, up to date on vaccines and has even had a dental cleaning. She is ready for the next and best chapter of her life.
