Cedar is a special girl who, despite the odds, loves to run and play with such enthusiasm.
A few weeks ago, we received a request to help a 10 week old puppy who had some difficulty walking. Upon arrival in our care, she was taken in to see our vet, where she was examined. X-rays were taken, which were shocking to us all; Cedar had a broken back and tail. Likely a trauma injury caused by the mom stepping on her at a young age. The x-rays were sent to an orthopedic surgeon who is surprised that Cedar can walk, let alone run and play! The injury is already well on its way to healing and will continue to heal over the coming months as she continues to grow. While it does affect communication to her back end, sometimes her hips will tilt to the side, and it takes her a moment to correct it. As well, her gait is slightly off when she walks, and anything faster than a walk will cause her to use both legs together (like a bunny hop).. and off she goes like lightening. While we cannot say this will not change as she grows, our veterinarian thinks it’s unlikely.
Cedar loves other dogs and will love having another dog in her future home to help entertain and exercise her. She would do best with a dog her size as she loves to PLAY, so a dog who can match her size and energy would be best. She is a busy girl who currently keeps all 3 of her foster sisters busy! She loves toy games, bones, and scent leading activities. She’s very smart and already learned some basic commands very quickly. She would do best in an active home that will keep her on the go and mentally stimulated. We suggest reading up on border collies and working breeds to get an idea of their smarts and energy level.
While Cedar crates well at night, she does not enjoy being crated otherwise. She wants to be on the go and with her people. She would do best with someone home most of the time, or where she can tag along to the workplace. She doesn’t seem to have separation issues; it appears to be more of an issue with the actual crate. Cedar will also need a yard to play in and space to roam and explore. True to her breed, she likes to be busy, she’s smart and enjoys figuring out food games, loves exploring and being exercised.
She has been doing really well with house training, but she is young and will need to be taken out on a regular basis to continue house training work.
Cedar does well with kids. However, given her spinal injury, we think she would do best with older children that would be understanding/aware. She has been around cats and tries to play with them, so a dog savvy cat would be best.
Cedar is a truly a sweet girl who, though shy at first, warms right up and wants to be everyone’s friend. She is smart and will be a lot of fun for an active family that will be happy to have her tag along.
