If you’re looking for a small beagle with a huge heart, Brody is your guy! He is the perfect combination of sweetness and spunk that beagle enthusiasts love. His favourite activities include: breakfast, dinner, snacks, meeting other dogs, going for long walks, hiking, enthusiastically celebrating life by throwing frozen Kongs around the house, zoomies, snuggling in to watch some TV, instigating play with his (large) foster dog brother, curling up in the perfect slice of sunshine to take a nap, and being worn like a scarf/snoring directly into your ear canal in bed every night.

Brody is a super special guy who has been deeply loved and well cared for, which is easy to see through his beautiful temperament. He is around 9 years old, weighing 26lbs– our vet said he’s in excellent health, with ideal body condition. He has received regular vetting and vaccines over the last 7 years, and his adoptive parent(s) may have access to all of his vet records. Unfortunately, Brody came back into our care 7 years after his initial adoption, after his beloved human mom tragically passed away. Although Brody is grieving, we can see that the bright light of his spirit is unshakeable in the face of great adversity.

Brody is on the high end of a medium energy dog, and would do best in a home that enjoys living a life of routine, ideally with another dog.

He is not currently crate trained, and we suspect that crate training him would definitely take some work. When left in a crate, Brody will chew on the bars and try to dig his way out. However, when left to free roam in the home, he is perfectly at ease and sleeps the day away for extended periods of time. The worst mischief he has gotten into is to open the cupboard where we keep the garbage and recycling, and checking to make sure we didn’t leave anything of value in there for him.

There is one important behavioural note about Brody that his forever family will need to consider. Because of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy that recently befell him, he is having some accidents in the house. We have narrowed down that he pees in the same couple of spots in the house whenever there is an unexpected adjustment to his schedule. For example, he has no accidents when left at home for around 8 hours while his foster parents are at work, but if one of us nips out in the evening to run an errand unexpectedly, if he isn’t redirected or supervised, he might have a quick pee. Our vet has ruled out any medical cause for this, so we would recommend working with a trainer, and/or a behaviourist to help support his emotional recovery. While this problem could certainly be managed by using a pee pad in his known pee spots, we are hoping his forever family will take a proactive approach to uncover and address the root cause. We believe it might take some time, especially when he faces another transition, but he’s definitely worth the effort and he’s already showing great promise.

Brody walks perfectly on a leash whether its on a trail or in the neighbourhood, he enjoys sniffing around, and meeting people and dogs. He is great in the car, hoping right in, sitting calmy in the backseat, sometimes jumping up to look out the window. He is quiet for a beagle, only giving a couple barks when you are not preparing his food quickly enough. He will also let out a little bark when he is getting ready to do his zoomies show, which is typically when he gets home from a walk. He is extremely food motivated and takes treats from your hand very gently. When the household is busy doing chores he calmy lays in the hallway, belly up, rolling around waiting for someone to see him for a belly rub. Brody has not shown any prey drive towards animals in the neighbourhood. He has not met cats while in foster care. Brody would do well in a house (with a secure, beagle proof backyard) or an apartment setting, he does not bark when his people leave or even when there is a knock at the door.

Overall Brody sweet little guy whose gentle soul and joyful spirit makes every day brighter. He has shown remarkable resilience, and all he needs now is a compassionate, patient family ready to give him the stability, routine, and love he deserves. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who will happily join you on every adventure and then curl up beside you at the end of the day, Brody is ready to fill that space in your home and your heart. Whoever welcomes him will be gaining not just a pet, but a devoted best friend.
