Sponsored by Anna Matthews- in memory of my little girl Molly that we lost on Thanksgiving. She was my precious most amazing baby.

Bailey (or Bailey Boo as she is affectionately called in her foster home) is a wonderful little pup! She’s friendly, curious, generally very quiet and calm, with burst of playful energy, and loves meeting new people and dogs. As a rescued breeding mama from a puppy mill in Ohio, Bailey is still learning what it’s like to be a pet inside a loving home, so she can be shy at times, but she’s a gentle soul and sweet little lady!

Bailey has made tremendous progress so far! She can still be a little bit skittish and is constantly learning new things. An adopter who is open to some training will be greatly rewarded by this little lady. She’s smart and will thrive in an encouraging and positive environment.

Bailey has a moderate energy level. She loves to go out for walks, but she’s also content to take a nap when her people are busy. She usually goes out for a short walk in the morning and in the evening for about 20-30 minutes depending on the day. Bailey is getting better on a leash every day – she can be nervous when there are unexpected noises, but otherwise she doesn’t pull or react to other dogs. She enjoys exploring and would do well with an adopter who enjoys a nice, leisurely stroll.

Bailey has been sleeping in a crate overnight and has done really well! She will bark if doesn’t know where her people are, so we found that as long as the crate is propped up so she can see, she settles and will sleep through the night without a peep! When we leave the house, we keep Bailey contained within the main living area instead of keeping her in the crate. This seems to be working pretty well, but she will bark off and on since she’s still getting used to being in the home by herself.

Since Bailey came from a mill situation, she is still working on house training. She now understands the concept of going outside to use the bathroom but has occasionally marked in the home. We’ve found that keeping Bailey on a consistent schedule and restricting where she can go in the home has helped tremendously. She is also still learning all about stairs – she has mastered going up the stairs but will still need some help getting down them until she figures it all out.

Bailey accepts being picked up and her paws handled, which is excellent since Havanese have hair instead of fur, so she will require regular grooming. Havanese are also low shedding, so you should only expect to see light seasonal shedding once or twice a year. Bailey has been bathed at her foster home a few times and has been absolutely great!

Bailey would be good in a home with or without another dog. She could continue to learn from having another dog in the home, but she generally wants to be with her people and doesn’t pay much attention to the other pups in the house. Bailey had also been in a home with a cat, and was very interested in them, so we would recommend a home with a dog-savvy cat.

Like many small dogs, Bailey has luxating patellas. This means that her kneecap can slip in and out of place. Bailey’s are a “grade 3”. The orthopedic surgeon we work with only recommends surgical intervention for the worst of the grade 4 luxations and when mobility is being negatively impacted. Bailey is doing very well. To optimize Bailey not having future issues it is important that she be kept at a healthy weight and that she not be encouraged to do things like standing up and jumping around just on her hind legs. Adding things like omegas and/or glucosamine chondroitin to her diet will also be beneficial to her overall joint health.

Bailey is a wonderful girl and will absolutely thrive in patient and loving home!
