Meet Brooke
Brooke came from a puppy mill in Ohio and is discovering what it means to be a cherished family dog. She is a very gentle, sweet girl who enjoys attention and happily wags her tail whenever someone greets her.
A few things to know about Brooke:
Her favourite spots: Brooke has come a long way in discovering where she feels most comfortable. She no longer spends her days in her crate and now enjoys relaxing in her dog bed, especially when she can find a sunny spot by the window. She loves soaking up the sunshine and sleeps peacefully on her dog bed at night. She settles well when left alone and shows no signs of separation anxiety.
Her personality: Brooke is a quiet little soul. She rarely barks, although she may let out a few excited barks when something particularly wonderful is happening, like the possibility of getting a treat! She doesn’t bark at visitors and generally takes everything in stride. She loves her chew toys and enjoys being close to her people, but she isn’t much of a lap dog. She prefers to hang out nearby on the floor rather than snuggle in your lap. She’s happiest with all four paws on the ground, enjoying your company from her favourite spot.
House training: Brooke is fully house-trained! She goes potty as soon as she is taken outside onto the grass. Although she doesn’t give obvious cues when she needs to go, taking her outside every few hours has worked perfectly, and she goes every time.
Mealtimes: Brooke is still learning about some of the little things that come with being a family dog. She hasn’t quite figured out how to eat from a bowl yet, but she happily eats her kibble when it’s scattered on the floor or offered by hand. Her human foster siblings love feeding her by hand, and Brooke certainly enjoys the extra attention! She is also a little floor vacuum who loves discovering surprise treats on the ground.
Walks and stairs: Brooke is making progress, one small step at a time! Walks are still a new experience, and while she doesn’t particularly enjoy them just yet, she will now walk for about 15 minutes at a slow, leisurely pace. She’s not the dog who’s going to pull you out the door for a brisk hike, but she’s learning to explore the world at her own speed.
Stairs are also a work in progress. The big staircase is still too intimidating for her, but she has successfully managed a small flight of up to five steps! Going down remains a challenge, and she’ll need patience and encouragement as she continues building confidence.
Kids and other animals: Brooke lives with children and has met many new people, greeting everyone with a happy wagging tail. She has lived with other dogs in the past without any issues, although she doesn’t currently share her foster home with other animals.
A note about her health: Brooke has been spayed and is fully vaccinated. Her veterinary examination noted a grade 1 medial patellar luxation in her left knee, meaning her kneecap can slip out of its normal position. She also has a small, approximately 5 mm underbite. These findings are worth discussing with her veterinarian as needed, but they don’t take away from the sweet girl she is.
Is Brooke the girl for you?
Brooke is a gentle, easygoing girl who is happy with the simple things in life: a cozy dog bed, a sunny window, a favourite chew toy, tasty treats, and having her people close by. She has already made lovely progress since leaving the puppy mill, and it’s wonderful to see her becoming more comfortable and confident in her surroundings.
Brooke will do best with a patient, understanding family who will celebrate her little victories, respect her comfort zone, and let her discover the world at her own pace. She may never be the adventurous hiking companion or the dog who curls up in your lap, but she’ll happily keep you company from her sunny spot nearby.
If you’re looking for a sweet, quiet companion who appreciates the simple pleasures in life and is learning that the world can be a safe and wonderful place, Brooke might just be your girl!
